Does everything go wrong? Of course it does. But this comes with a great big string attached: George and Lou must take a cross-country road trip to kill Asher Anderson, a cloak-wearing lycanthrope who would love to see a war between humans and werewolves. Not as a flesh-eating zombie he’s the old Lou, as much of a wiseass as before. Then he receives some shocking news: people at the compound have brought his partner and best friend Lou back to life. George knows they can’t stay there forever, but for now, things are pretty good. He’s living in a secure compound where teenaged werewolf Ally is being trained to control her animalistic tendencies, and mad science experiment Eugene has regained most of his sanity. In that way, it is a kind of kissing cousin to the aforementioned Wild At Heart from Barry Gifford (though Strand does not include anything resembling that novel’s central romance element). Though still mourning his recent loss, George Orton is surprisingly content. Wolf Hunt is unlike most of Strand’s other travel tales in that the road story faces a massive interruption midway. Facebook decided it did not breach their Community Guidelines on nudity and it was not removed. This picture was reported for nudity on my timeline after I posted it in support of Michael Stokes Photography. While Facebook is free to determine those standards, and we may not agree with them, everyone who follows those rules should receive equal treatment. Michael’s photos fully comply with Facebook’s community standards. Yet other photographers and profiles who post similar pictures do not receive such harassment. Michael Stokes is gay and has a huge following within the LGBT community. Michael Stokes Photography was recently banned from Facebook for 30 days after posting this portrait of two uniformed gay police officers kissing. It seems anyone can object to any photograph and Facebook investigates. Michael Stokes Photography, Jesse Jackman and Dirk Caber, myself, along with many others have been victims of Facebook’s reporting system. Other times, the person’s profile is banned from posting further pictures for a number of days and warned that the account may be deleted if this occurs again. One of the team investigates and often the picture is not removed because it does not violate their community guidelines. Wrong! Well, according to certain narrow-minded people on Facebook and elsewhere.įor some time now, people who post photos of two men kissing or holding hands, even if they are clothed, have been reported on Facebook. Together they speak of sharing their direct experience of God but Yeshu’a unexpectedly gains a reputation as a healer, and as the ill and the troubled flock to him, he and Magdalene are forced to make a terrible decision. Salome too begins to believe, but Mariamne, now called Magdalene, is drawn to his cousin, Yeshu’a, a man touched by the divine in the same way she was during her days of illness. It is her prophesying that drives the two girls to flee to Egypt, where they study philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy in the Great Library of Alexandria.Īfter seven years they return to a Judaea where many now believe John the Baptizer is the messiah. But Mariamne has a further gift: an illness has left her with visions she has the power of prophecy. Raised like sisters, Mariamne and Salome are indulged with riches, position, and learning-a rare thing for females in Jerusalem. Though it seems as though Deadly Classwill eventually focus on at least six students from King’s Dominion, we initially only get to know Marcus, a homeless and scarred teenage orphan who witnessed the death of his parents. They’re training to be assassins at the King’s Dominion School for the Deadly Arts - an institution whose secrets figure to be revealed with a drip drop kind of anti-swiftness. Now Remender wants us to go back to the ’80s with him and he wants to tell us about this batch of kids who are fruit from the rotted tree of this world’s worst criminals. He cant focus in class, thanks to his mind constantly drifting to the stunning girl in the front row and the Dag Nasty show he has tickets. We’re devout because of Fear Agent, Black Science, much of the work done for Marvel, and so on and so forth. Deadly Class 1 Deadly Class (2014) Its 1987. This response to our interdependence, this choice to be shelter or shadow, belongs to each of us. What matters is not so much the fact of our entanglement as our attention to it and our attunement to one another. We are tangled up in one another for good and for ill. We lived amidst deep interconnection, and I have often noted that an interconnected web of life can be a net to catch us, but it can also be a spider’s weapon to trap and kill. He knows intimately that we live in both the shelter and the shadow of one another. O Tuama runs a Christian peace and reconciliation center in Northern Ireland called the Corrymeela Community, which was founded in 1965 to aid all affected by the Northern Irish conflict. It more literally means: “People exist in each other’s shadows.” O Tuama’s poem, however, shows that the phrase has more than one valid translation. In a poem in his Daily Prayer book, the Irish poet Padraig O Tuama examines an old Irish Proverb, “Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine,” which is frequently translated: “In the shelter of one another the people live.” I enjoy these books for what they are: good juvenile escapist fiction. However, one must remember that she was in fact writing this for the young adult audience and, though some may disagree with me, young teenagers and older tweens do tend to have shorter attention spans. My only real beef with the series in general is that in so many scenes, there could have been much more description, and many could have been extended. Cooper's ability to develop relationships between her characters is really astounding in these books. There were instances when he was just charming and fun to read about and of course, the sibling interactions between Simon, Jane and Barney are never dull. Cooper also did a marvelous job of making him both an Old One and a young boy. I think he's a much better character when he's not the sole focus of the narrative. I'm not a huge fan of Will Stanton but I love the Drew children and in this book, the interaction between Will and the Drews made Will's character very bearable for me. Show More is by far my favorite book of the series so far. Including a couple scenes that deserve a trigger warning, which I did not anticipate. While the story is quirky and the writing is clever and humorous at parts, there are some serious topics addressed. Elizabeth shows her vulnerable side only on rare occasions. She’s very intelligent and tired of dealing with other people’s bad behavior. She’s extremely serious and to the point. I don’t think I’ve ever read one quite like her before. Elizabeth’s StoryĮlizabeth is such an engaging protagonist. And while she takes cooking very seriously, she also embarks plenty of lessons to her mostly female audience. Through an extraordinary set of events, she ends up becoming the host of a TV cooking show. Everything changes for Elizabeth when the most unlikely event happens-she falls in love with a fellow scientist, Calvin.īut as life is unpredictable, Elizabeth eventually finds herself as a single mother and without a job. All she wants to do is work on her scientific research but the patriarchy keeps standing in her way. Plenty of misogyny and people doubting her skills. Lessons in Chemistry follows Elizabeth Zott: a one-of-a-kind scientist in 1960s California whose career takes a detour when she becomes the unlikely star of a beloved TV cooking show.Įlizabeth has dealt with it all. I actually felt the story really took off when the TV cooking show part began. But I will say it did take me a bit to get into the story. |
