As conspiracy, collusion and overly helpful city officials frustrate his investigation at every turn, Ruso feels increasingly tainted by the moral ambiguities inherent in colonial administration.Ĭaveat Emptor is darker and more complex than previous Ruso mysteries, but balanced by a nicely judged comic touch. Ruso is warned to “keep the locals sweet”, but the natives may not be as friendly as they seem. The Procurator’s finance office hires Ruso to trace nearby Verulamium’s tax collector, who has disappeared along with the self-governing city’s tax collection. “What do women want exactly?” they wonder, baffled. Valens welcomes Ruso and Tilla to Londinium, but appears distracted. Under pressure to provide a home for Tilla, the tableware and maybe a family, Ruso is relieved to hear that his charming but unreliable friend Valens has found him a job. Women always did… and there was only so much planning a man could stand. He’s still stunned to realise that he’s now a married man and to prove it has not only his native British bride Tilla but a wedding gift from his family: a full set of matching red Gallic tableware. Set in the second century AD, Caveat Emptor sees former Roman Army medic and sometime investigator Gaius Petreius Ruso return to Britannia from his eventful trip to Gaul. Delaney wants to get married and have children, and she lets Sam believe this is the only reason why she’s changing her life. I loved when Sam decided to start playing matchmaker. He’s panicking because he’s watching her leave him and he doesn’t know why. She’s gradually removing him from her life and he’s madly running around trying to patch up whatever’s wrong, to fix the problems he can’t figure out. Then she puts her apartment on the market (Sam lives in the same complex). They’ve been best friends since they were kids, and then one day she comes back from holidays and announces she’s walking away from everything. Sam is devastated by Delaney’s decision to walk away from the business they run together. She writes in a way that makes you feel as though you’ve read a much longer, more complex novel. Considering the fangirl obsession I’ve developed with the other book, this one was never going to quite match it for me! Being a Blaze, there’s plenty of – uh – ‘Blazey’ stuff – but as with all of Mayberry’s books, it’s a story with ‘more’ than you’ll find in other category books. I have to admit, I still prefer Her Best Friend to this one, but this was a very good read. Sarah Mayberry writes great ‘friends to lovers’ stories. When the anti-matter universe during Crisis on Infinite Earths (opens in new tab) causes the Green Lantern Corps' Central Power Battery to run dry, the Guardians of Oa take drastic measures. Incredibly controversial at the time and a raw and emotional read to this day, 'Emerald Twilight' is an intensely memorable Green Lantern tale. Darryl Banks' Green Lantern #49 cover art, bearing that infamous image of a wild-eyed Hal flaunting the rings of his fallen fellow Lanterns, is an all-time classic. Writer Ron Marz challenges us to wonder how far we would go to save our loved ones while forcing us to watch the once-rational Hal Jordan's descent into madness. Reinventing the once calm and responsible Hal for the chaotic '90s, 'Emerald Twilight' is a classic case of 'this time, the bad guy wins!' Green Lantern: Emerald Twilight (opens in new tab) is the ultimate fall from grace story. Finally, Hal Jordan absorbs the power of the central battery and emerges as a newly established villain – Parallax. He dispatches the entire Corps and the Guardians fall after transferring their energy into one sole survivor. Power hungry and in betrayal of his oath to not use the ring for personal gain, Hal wages a one-man war on Oa to revive his lost home. Wracked with loss and rage following the catastrophic loss of his home of Coast City, Green Lantern Hal Jordan attempts to recreate it through sheer force of will. In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass, a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound. But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by-palm readings, zars, healings-are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles. Certainly, she has power on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent.
